The intent of this book is to provide practical guidance on how to get started with cloud computing and Google Cloud and be productive in a shortest possible time frame.

This book provides a mix of basic foundation concepts, along with advanced topics which teaches you practical #cloudcomputing concepts and fundamentals, the “why” and “how” part of getting things done to build cloud applications. The concepts are generic in nature and applicable to all cloud providers like #AWS and #Azure, but the Labs demonstration is available only for Google Cloud

Apart from cloud computing, the book also teaches you dual skills on how to create multi cloud applications - basically build applications in a way that can be deployed to any cloud provider, like Google Cloud, Azure or AWS. Secondly, the book teaches you practical ways of getting things done that would help you in your cloud journey.

I also share our latest podcast with The Economist, where I’m joined by a leading authority, Ziliang Zong, Professor of the Computer Science Department at Texas State University, to discuss the impact and implications of green software on sustainable business.

Had a great time interacting with live audience and talking about #greensoftware #sustainability and #technology at the Nasscom Annual Technology Conference #NATC  NASSCOM Accenture.
Thanks to everyone who attended the session.

Technology itself has a carbon footprint and we need to consider sustainability as a first class citizen while designing and delivering software applications.

I also have seen if you quantify the carbon reduction opportunities, which can be easily visualised like - “your software/application at scale would be used by millions of users and carbon reduction savings from your entire software/hardware stack can be mapped to planting of 100 trees”,  can make the teams more responsible and have a greater connect towards the green software initiative.

As #software professionals, we all have a role to play to embed energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions to contribute our part towards a greener environment. Start your journey with small changes, small improvements can have a big impact at scale.

It’s not easy to switch over to new languages, my suggestion is to start small. Small improvements at scale can have a big impact.

DevOps can be viewed as a cultural shift and this research validates a number of technical, process, measurement, and cultural capabilities that drive higher software delivery and organisational performance.

Blue green deployment is an important strategy as part of your devOps process. If you are leveraging kubernetes and Google Cloud Kubernetes Engine (GKE), GKE now supports Blue-green upgrades, which provides more flexibility and control over the upgrade process.

Only caveat is Blue green deployment would increase your cost temporally as the original environment is maintained during the upgrade for rollback. Not all production workload would require Blue green deployment as a strategy, so trade-offs against cost needs to be evaluated. The process worked seamlessly for my deployments.

Docker Swarm or kubernetes - My first production deployment of kubernetes was in 2016. We were evaluating whether to use Docker Swarm or kubernetes. The devOps processes and container managed solutions were still evolving. Kubernetes has come a long way and made things simplified, being adopted by all cloud providers and now it’s the def-facto choice for running containers on any platform. With devOps, tools are now streamlined with open source CI/CD options like Jenkins and monitoring via prometheus or cloud vendor supported devOps tools like Cloud Build, Cloud Pipeline ..

According to CNCF’s respondents, 96% of organisations are either using or evaluating Kubernetes.

where Kubernetes is starting to go “under the hood” and in my view, probably has a potential to expand and become the computing environment for not just platforms, but any device.

Write serverless apps in python using Chalice framework. If you want to quickly create prototypes in python and deploy applications on AWS Lambda seamlessly, try out this python framework. It also integrates with other AWS services like Amazon API Gateway, Amazon S3.

The cloud optimization guidelines covers the following categories

• Adopt and implement FinOps
• Monitor and control cost
• Compute, containers, and serverless optimisation
• Storage optimisation
• Database optimization
• Network optimizations
• Operations

Often network optimization is overlooked as part of the cloud optimisation and design of VPC networks, storage of VPC Logs, use of different network service tiers based on environments (prod, dev), data compression techniques, use of internal IP address and
adopting geo-location can reduce your cloud bills significantly.

I will also add managing devOps as part of Operations to include frequency of builds, container image optimization for storage reductions and CI/CD resource optimization as part of the list.

The diagrams as a code tool supports all cloud providers like #AWS, #Azure, #GoogleCloud, #AlibabaCloud, #IBM and their respective services/components. If some of the services are not available, you can create one using the custom node feature.

Technically, one full stack engineer can deliver your end-2-end project/solutions. This is an interesting article on the rise of full stack engineers and demand for it.

In my view, the demand for full stack engineers will rise even further as they transition fast and adopt new skills for Web 3.0 and Metaverse.
