About
Navveen Balani
Making systems intelligent, efficient & responsible.
"My mission is educating learners and leaders to create systems the planet and the balance sheet can afford."
Keynoting at CleanEnviro Summit Singapore, 2026.
I've spent over 26 years building and shipping exponential technology — from enterprise systems and SOA, through cloud, IoT, and blockchain, to AI and agentic systems — turning each new wave into business transformation for global organizations. The technologies kept changing; the job stayed the same: make what's next work for the business. And across all of it, one throughline — intelligence, efficiency, and responsibility are the same engineering problem. The record of that journey lives on this site: 1812 articles, newsletter editions, books, talks, videos, and podcast episodes.
What I'm working on
My current focus is advancing sustainable AI and green software — through global collaboration, standards leadership, and ecosystem development. That work spans three threads: shaping how the industry measures the footprint of software and AI, teaching practitioners and leaders how to reduce it, and publishing what I learn along the way.
I'm the author of Lean Agentic AI, the first practical guide to building efficient, scalable, and responsible agentic systems — focused on governance, financial discipline, and sustainability. I also write two newsletters, Technology Bytes and Green AI Bytes, and host the podcast Agentic AI: The Future of Intelligent Systems.
Green Software Foundation
I serve as Executive Director of the Green Software Foundation (part of the Linux Foundation), leading its mission to build a trusted ecosystem of people, standards, tools, and best practices that enable organizations to reduce the energy consumption and carbon impact of software and AI systems. The work brings together industry leaders, policymakers, and practitioners to drive measurable progress in cost efficiency, energy optimization, carbon reduction, and responsible AI adoption.
I lead and drive industry contributions to global standards, including the ISO Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) specification and the emerging SCI for AI framework — shaping how organizations measure, benchmark, and optimize energy use, carbon emissions, and operational efficiency across software and AI lifecycles.
Before this
Previously, I served as Managing Director and Chief Technologist for Tech Sustainability Innovation at Accenture, where I established and scaled the firm's tech sustainability capabilities across global clients — developing sustainability-focused assets, platforms, and frameworks that enabled organizations to measure and reduce cost, energy consumption, and carbon emissions across software and AI systems, translating into large-scale client programs and enterprise adoption. This included ISO-aligned frameworks shaping how sustainability is measured and operationalized, with the work recognized in independent evaluations by Forrester and Everest Group.
Earlier in my career, I held leadership roles at IBM Watson Labs, working on early generations of Watson and enterprise AI, and was a founding member of startups driving AI-native platforms across banking, retail, and fintech — one of which, Webify, was acquired by IBM.
Writing & recognition
I'm a LinkedIn Top Voice in AI, a Google Cloud Fellow, and the author of 26+ books — 26 years of writing that has tracked the technology spectrum itself: web and enterprise Java, SOA, mobile, cloud, IoT, blockchain, and today AI, agentic systems, and green software — all published here in markdown since 2005.
Let's build a responsible future.
