How do you reduce the carbon impact of your #digital #cloud infrastructure and balance trade-offs across cost and latency.

One of the starting points is to leverage a cloud region that offers clean energy.

If you are running on Google Cloud, you can try the Google Cloud Region picker tool - https://lnkd.in/dTCRCiNF which helps you pick a Google Cloud region considering carbon footprint, price, and latency.

Also, if your production workloads can’t run on the cleanest region due to your requirements like data sovereignty, do consider running non-production workloads on the cleanest regions.

The region section is just one part of how you can reduce the carbon impact. Apart from moving to the cloud, the focus should be on designing and developing energy-efficient cloud applications from day one.

Sustainable Technology is one of the Gartner Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2023. At the recent Google Cloud Next 22 event, one of the cloud technology predictions was - “3 out of 4 developers will lead with sustainability as their primary development principle”.

Carbon footprint tools are now supported by all major cloud vendors but need to provide more real-time and actionable insights. Hopefully, this gap will be closed soon.

Probably the first-ever carbon-aware computing hackathon was concluded at our recent Green Software Foundation event with over 50 projects participating.

It’s great to see the momentum building towards Technology Sustainability and making it more actionable.

To summarise from Gartner’s report, Investments in sustainable technology provide operational and financial benefits and can create growth opportunities.

For a limited time, the first 1000 users get my new course “Getting started with cloud computing and Google Cloud” for free. Click this URL - https://lnkd.in/dKzmCmR5 to avail of the offer.

This course is targeted at students and software practitioners who are looking to build a career in cloud computing, learn the “why” and “how” part of getting things done to build cloud applications, and be industry ready.

Apart from cloud computing, the course also teaches you dual skills in creating multi-cloud applications - basically building applications in a way that can be deployed to any cloud provider, like Google Cloud, Azure or AWS. Secondly, the course teaches you practical ways of getting things done, that would help you in your cloud journey.

Happy learning !! Please do share with your network.

One of the important aspects of Green Software Foundation - Software Carbon Intensity Specification is about reduction and not carbon offsets. You can reduce the carbon emission for your application by 3 key strategies - developing energy efficient application, using efficient/less hardware for some amount of computing or being carbon-aware by picking the clean region and time to run your workloads. Not all workloads need to run at the same time.

Glad to contribute towards the 1.0 release. Looking forward to the event today. Register for Decarbonize Software event: https://lnkd.in/gQxcM3bV

Multi-cloud development strategy

One of the strategic decisions that enterprises need to make is how they can be cloud-agnostic due to various drivers that include cost model, customer affinity towards a particular cloud vendor, availability of cloud regions, disaster recovery strategy, or compliance and regulations.

Going forward, multi-cloud support would be a key strategic decision being adopted by all enterprises.

Even though, multi-cloud support may not be a current priority for your enterprises, enterprises should adopt cloud-native applications and principles, so it can help transition to a multi-cloud environment seamlessly based on future requirements. In this way, enterprises can be multicloud-ready.

t’s good to see Amazon Neptune moved to serverless, especially for graph databases where compute and memory resources provisioning would now be handled by AWS cloud.

Having worked on Amazon Neptune for user profiling and recommendations, one of the challenges was around cost and provisioning and going serverless should address it.

In future, you will have serverless options for all the major products and services. Serverless is not only great for effective resource utilisation, and cost benefits but also reduces the carbon footprint of your application.

Top 5 strategy to optimize the build and CI/CD process. Having a optimized CI/CD process results in faster, efficient and cost effective builds.

Here are Top 5 things to start with for CI/CD optimization –

Build Lean Container Images – Separate building the application from building its runtime layer and build form minimal base images Reference –  https://lnkd.in/dEfQTpdZ

Using a cache like Kaniko with your build to cache container build artifacts .Kaniko works with all major cloud container registry. Reference – https://lnkd.in/dVcrwN4z

Selective deployment based on last run and changes – Reference – https://lnkd.in/dd3Cq32c

Minimize dependency and exclude files not required by build using vendor supported .ignore files – Reference – ( For docker, refer to BuildKit and .dockerignore , Link – https://lnkd.in/duxNrceV )

Move towards Green Ops – Understand the carbon impact of your builds and schedule – batch changes for build, leverage green regions and timelines. Participate in the Green Software Foundation Hackathon to build sustainable applications https://lnkd.in/dUC8geyd

Selective deployments should be part of your DevOps optimization process. You can optimise your CI/CD pipeline by deploying only what has changed from the last run of the pipeline.

Look at the following reference for one of the ways to implement selective deployment - https://lnkd.in/dd3Cq32c

Optimising the CI/CD pipeline not only ensure faster builds, but better resource and cost optimization
