Worldwide end-user spending on public cloud services is forecast to grow 20.7% to a total $591.8 billion in 2023,
up from $490.3 billion in 2022. This is higher than the 18.8% growth forecast for 2022. (Source: Gartner)

Out of the above spend, what do you think would be the -

  • Cost of cloud resources that would remain idle?
  • How much cost can be saved from cloud resources optimization?
  • What impact does it have on sustainability?

As per the Google Cloud report in Feb 2022, they analyzed the aggregate data from all customers across Google Cloud and
found over 600,000 gross kgCO2e in seemingly idle projects that could be cleaned up or reclaimed —
which would have a similar impact to planting almost 10,000 trees. This is data from one provider,
only for idle projects. I could not find any public data for cloud optimization, but it would be quite significant.

As migration, development and deploying applications on the cloud continue to increase, we need to embed sustainability
while designing and deploying cloud applications, to lower the carbon footprint of the software applications. This not only lowers your cost bills, but also makes your application energy efficent.

The release of ChatGPT and the responses it provided brought back the Conversation AI to the forefront and made Conversation AI available to everyone through a simple web interface. We saw many creative ways to use ChatGPT and how it might impact the future and questions around whether it will replace the Google Search engine and Jobs.

Well, let’s address this question with the below analysis –

From early Watson systems to ChatGPT, a fundamental issue still remains with Conversational AI.

Lack of Domain Intelligence.

While ChatGPT definitely advances in the field of Conversational AI, I like to call out the following from my book- Real AI: Chatbots (published in 2019)

AI can learn but can’t think“.

Thinking would always be left to humans on how to use the output of an AI system. AI systems and their knowledge will always be boxed to what it has learned but can never be generalized (like humans) where domain expertise and intelligence are required.

What is the carbon emission of #ChatGPT ?. I gave ChatGPT (https://lnkd.in/dJSrwx8a) a try today on my favourite topic - “Technology and Sustainability” and found the response and follow-up very well structured.

It would be interesting to see how much carbon emissions were generated to train such large models and for inference/response.
I also asked this question to ChatGPT :) but got errors multiple times.

From devOps to GreenOps : How do you reduce the carbon impact of your #digital #cloud infrastructure and balance trade-offs across cost and latency.

One of the starting points is to leverage a cloud region that offers clean energy.

If you are running on Google Cloud, you can try the Google Cloud Region picker tool - https://lnkd.in/dTCRCiNF which helps you pick a Google Cloud region considering carbon footprint, price, and latency.

Also, if your production workloads can’t run on the cleanest region due to your requirements like data sovereignty, do consider running non-production workloads on the cleanest regions.

The region section is just one part of how you can reduce the carbon impact. Apart from moving to the cloud, the focus should be on designing and developing energy-efficient cloud applications from day one.
