Over the last two decades, I’ve witnessed and architected several tech transformations—from the dawn of the internet to the rise of cloud computing and now the explosion of Generative AI. Each wave has required us to reevaluate and renew our guiding principles in software architecture and design.

The recent GitHub survey underscores just how significant Generative AI has become in software development. AI is no longer just a tool; it’s evolving into a partner capable of taking on coding responsibilities at a scale we’ve never seen before. But this evolution prompts a critical question: “If AI does all the coding in the future, what do we do?

The answer lies not in resisting AI but in embracing a new role—we will guide AI and architect the DNA of future software systems based on ten modern principles essential for navigating this AI-powered landscape.

However, it’s crucial to remember that while AI can learn, it can’t think—at least not in the way humans do. AI excels at recognizing patterns, automating tasks, and generating code, but the deeper thinking—drawing correlations across diverse systems, integrating solutions, and making nuanced decisions—remains uniquely human.

Humans can approach problems from entirely new perspectives, devise innovative solutions, and think creatively or ‘outside the box’ in ways that AI cannot replicate, especially when faced with challenges it hasn’t been trained on. This ability to conceptualize new ideas and methodologies is crucial in developing groundbreaking and integrated software systems and technologies. This is where we should build our expertise.

This philosophy is the driving force behind my book, “Architecting the Future: Principles of Modern Software Design.” In it, I blend my experiences from these transformative decades with practical advice and visionary thought, offering a roadmap for creating architectures that are not only technically sound but also ethically aware, sustainable, and adaptable to the ever-changing digital realm.

For software developers, the challenge isn’t about competing with AI—it’s about elevating our role to that of architects and visionaries, shaping the future of software with AI as our trusted ally.

The EU AI Act emphasizes that AI should be developed and used in an environmentally friendly manner, minimizing its ecological footprint. This regulation integrates several key measures to achieve this goal:

  1. Promoting Environmental Sustainability: The regulation encourages the development of AI systems that lead to environmentally beneficial outcomes. This includes promoting research and development of AI solutions aimed at meeting environmental targets, such as energy efficiency, environmental monitoring, conservation, and climate change mitigation and adaptation

  2. Environmental Well-being as a Guiding Principle: One of the guiding ethical principles for AI under the EU AI Act is to ensure that AI systems are developed and used in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. This principle is intended to guide the design, development, and deployment of AI systems, ensuring they contribute positively to environmental well-being and are assessed for long-term impacts on the environment

  3. Codes of Conduct and Voluntary Measures: The Act encourages providers of AI systems to create voluntary codes of conduct that include measures for environmental sustainability. These codes of conduct should be based on clear objectives and key performance indicators, developed in an inclusive manner with input from various stakeholders, including environmental experts. This initiative aims to foster the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices in AI development and deployment

  4. Evaluation and Reporting on Environmental Impact: The EU AI Act mandates regular evaluations and reports on the development of standards for the energy-efficient development of AI models. This includes assessing the impact and effectiveness of voluntary codes of conduct concerning environmental sustainability. These evaluations are intended to ensure that AI systems contribute to environmental protection and resource efficiency

  5. Mitigation Measures and Systemic Risks: The Act provides for the implementation of mitigation measures to address systemic risks, including those related to environmental sustainability. Providers may be required to take specific actions to comply with environmental obligations, ensuring that AI systems do not pose significant risks to the environment

If you are not measuring your AI systems’ environmental impact, start now. Incorporate environmental sustainability metrics into your AI development and deployment processes to ensure compliance with the EU AI Act and contribute to a more sustainable future.

🌿 As software practitioners, how can we adopt green software practices? Here are the key steps:

  1. Awareness: Start by becoming aware of the environmental impact of your software. Understand that your application’s overall design and efficiency contribute to its energy consumption.

  2. Understanding: Gain a deeper understanding of your code’s impact using tools and frameworks. The Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) specification and the Impact Framework from our Green Software Foundation are open-source and provide valuable insights into your software’s carbon footprint. Leverage these resources to measure and understand the energy consumption of your applications.

  3. Opportunity to Apply: Once you are aware and understand your impact, look for opportunities to apply green software practices. There are two main approaches:
    — Optimizing Existing Code/Infrastructure/Architecture: Start with small, impactful changes. For example, improve the efficiency of your current codebase and infrastructure.
    — Strategic Replacement: When possible, replace parts of your code with more efficient alternatives. For example, A sidecar implementation in Kubernetes transitioned a portion of code from JavaScript to Rust, achieving a 75% reduction in CPU usage and a 95% reduction in memory usage. This shows how strategic replacements can lead to substantial energy savings. (Link to the use case in comments section)

  4. Spread the Word: You have the power to make a difference. Share your knowledge and experiences with your peers. Encourage others to adopt green software practices and raise awareness about the importance of sustainability in software development.
