{"id":1694,"date":"2015-04-11T16:24:12","date_gmt":"2015-04-11T10:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/naveenbalani.com\/?p=1694"},"modified":"2016-09-17T09:23:10","modified_gmt":"2016-09-17T03:53:10","slug":"iot-experimentation-kit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/navveenbalani.dev\/index.php\/articles\/iot-experimentation-kit\/","title":{"rendered":"IoT Experimentation Kit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are some of the various options by which\u00a0you can start your\u00a0experimentation with IoT.<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Sphero <\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; A bluetooth enabled robotic device which can receive various commands.Use the Sphero SDK for Android and IOS for interacting via smart phones to Sphero. The smart phone can be\u00a0IoT enabled as per my earlier article &#8211; <strong><a title=\"IOT \u2013 IPhone, Android as a connected device\" href=\"http:\/\/naveenbalani.com\/index.php\/2015\/04\/iot-iphone-android-as-a-connected-device\/\" target=\"_blank\">Phone as a connected device<\/a><\/strong> \u00a0and receive commands from the internet to light up the Sphero based on signals and various notifications (like important emails), drive a Sphero using the Chariot or use Sphero as a controller to games. You can order one via &#8211; http:\/\/store.gosphero.com\/. The\u00a0power of Bluetooth\u00a0gives you a lot of\u00a0connectivity options to experiment with various other devices.<\/p>\n<p>I am working on a sample where my phone is connected to Sphero via Bluetooth and the phone is also connected to the IoT platform to receive commands from the web, which\u00a0is interpreted by the smart phone and provided to Sphero for carrying out the required action. I will post the tutorial once ready. I am also looking at a way where the Sphero can directly be connected to the IoT foundation, eliminating using the smart phone as a workaround.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can also\u00a0add cognitive capabilities to Sphero<\/strong>, like interact with Sphero using natural language interfaces, like a chat interface or voice commands. Currently you can carry out the experiment via the smart phone which\u00a0is connected to IoT and the smart phone can use the\u00a0Sphero SDK to communicate to Sphero via bluetooth protocol.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Raspbery Pi 2 &#8211; Starter Kit<\/strong>. Here is the\u00a0list of items which I recommend.<br \/>\nRaspberry Pi 2 with 1 GB RAM<br \/>\nProtoPi prototyping kit with breadboard and jumper wires for working with GPIO embedded capability<br \/>\nEnclosure Kit<br \/>\nWifi adapter for internet connection<br \/>\n5V, 2A power adapter<br \/>\n8 GB class 10 microSD card with NOOBS pre-installed<br \/>\nVarious Electronic Components, like LEDs, Switches and Registers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/naveenbalani.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Rasberry_Pi2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1725\" src=\"http:\/\/naveenbalani.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Rasberry_Pi2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Rasberry_Pi2\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/navveenbalani.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Rasberry_Pi2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/navveenbalani.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Rasberry_Pi2-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am working on a sample which capture images, uses the Image services to recognize known images or category of images and send messages\u00a0to mobile phones if a new image is identified. Stay tuned for more updates.<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Arduino \u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Is the widely used IoT device which fueled the IoT economy, you can\u00a0power the device as well as push the code using a USB cable. You can use an IDE &#8211;\u00a0http:\/\/www.arduino.cc\/en\/main\/Software , to develop and push code to the device. \u00a0Stay tuned for the upcoming\u00a0ArduinoBoard Zero &#8211;\u00a0http:\/\/www.arduino.cc\/en\/Main\/ArduinoBoardZero which provides a\u00a0powerful 32-bit extension of the\u00a0Arduino UNO platform. I plan to use it to create a project on wearable technology.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0<strong>BeagleBoard black<\/strong> is a credit-card-sized Linux computer that connects to the Internet and runs software such as Android 4.0 and Ubuntu. The programming language is Javascript based and<br \/>\nthe familiar Node.js.
